Shade of Ebony

I was inspired by some of Cairo’s lyrical talent, and this flowed. I plan to upload an audio version, because it was written to be spoken and not just read. Please feel free to critique. ~ T. L.

You
look at her
and think
her
smile says it all
That
she’s got it all
But
it ain’t like that at all

You
hear her laugh
and think
her
life’s smooth sailing
That
she can’t be failing
That
she must be happy

But
she laughs
to
hide her insecurity
She
smiles to
frighten her demons
She
shuts out reality
Builds
a life of fantasy
Chokes
on dreamt up dreams
of
happiness and security

In her
private moments
when
she’s stripped off
her layers
She
lays it bare
There
And the demons
return to
taunt her lack of grace

She
doesn’t fight it
It’s
away from
all those who know her
And
she lets it slip
Lets
it drip
the salty whisper
that contains
nothing short of pain

Don’t
look at her
with pitiful glances
For
she will smile
brighten a room
that’s
filled with
darkness upon darkness
Despite
the room of
her heart
bearing nothing
but the shade of ebony.

  1. I love this; so simple and yet so poignant. Favourite lines?
    She
    lays it bare
    There
    And…
    And
    she lets it slip
    Lets
    it drip

Bring on the audio version! Love ya, girl, masha Allah!
